Use the tool for a defined purpose

State Cost Compare is a planning reference for investigating a relocation. You may select jurisdictions, inspect their published benchmarks and calculate scenarios from your own prepared inputs. The tool does not quote a lease, approve financing, assess a property, prepare a tax return or recommend a particular transaction. A number displayed in a comparison is useful only within its stated period, geographic population and unit.

Historical observations

The BEA price indices currently describe 2024, while the Census five-year estimates combine observations from 2020 through 2024. A page’s reviewed date records an editorial check, rather than the date every observation was collected. An occupied home-value median is different from a current listing, and a median annual tax amount is different from the bill on a specific parcel. Published uncertainty and definitions remain part of the evidence whenever a value is reused.

Your household assumptions

Prepared monthly costs and annual income must use consistent categories. Gross rent already incorporates certain tenant-paid utilities under the Census definition; avoid adding the same charge twice when replacing it with a lease quote. Net annual income must already reflect approved tax treatment and comparable benefits. A destination can have a lower price index while the particular job, housing tenure or commute leaves the household with fewer resources. The worksheet preserves that possibility, including negative differences.

Sharing and reuse

Shared budget links can contain the amounts you entered. You are responsible for checking what a recipient will see before sending the link. A copied result should retain its scenario inputs, observation vintage and limitations. Do not represent an illustration as a guaranteed saving, an agency decision or an individualized professional opinion. Refer to the underlying agency if you need permission or conditions for reusing its publications.

Errors and decisions

Data releases can be revised, sources can move, and calculator defects can occur. The contact form accepts a page, source citation and reproducible example so the team can investigate. A storage acknowledgement confirms receipt, rather than agreement with a correction or a promised response time. Verify binding contracts, local rules and personal financial decisions with the appropriate providers or qualified advisers. The site’s editorial process supports an accurate reference, while the final decision still depends on facts the benchmark table cannot establish.
