Updated BEA 2024 regional price parities

Price-level ladder, lowest to highest

The list below orders the verified 2024 all-items regional price parities from lowest to highest. A value of 100 equals the national price level. Each guide also identifies the closest other jurisdiction on this particular measure, so a broadly similar price level can be checked against different housing and income observations.

A price ranking answers one question

The index compares regional consumer price levels. It cannot rank the quality of an offered job, determine the rent on an apartment, or combine personal preferences into a best-state recommendation. The District of Columbia appears as its own geography alongside the fifty states, giving 51 supported jurisdictions. This is a jurisdiction ranking rather than a statement that the District is a state. Puerto Rico has no corresponding BEA state parity in the selected table and is excluded.

Follow the observation to a quote

For a rental move, investigate lease terms, dwelling size, utility responsibility and travel costs. For an ownership move, prepare financing, insurance, maintenance and the actual expected local assessment and bill. The Census household-income median includes households with different earners and cannot supply a missing personal salary. Bring those actual amounts to the household budget worksheet. A low index can coexist with an unfavorable prepared budget, and that possibility remains visible in the calculation.

The source register identifies the exact federal series and observation periods. The methodology explains why a point-estimate order does not establish statistical significance. Use the interactive comparison board for any two jurisdictions; its choices do not create additional indexed pair pages.
