Florida: no income tax, the highest rent burden
The rent burden is Florida's defining number. The two-bedroom gross-rent median of $1,664 ranks ninth, while the median household income of $74,568 ranks only 34th, and the result is the highest rent-to-income share among all 51 jurisdictions. The rent parity of 122.107 (rank 43) confirms that rents, not goods, drive the state's price level: goods at 98.059 and utilities at 90.074 are both below the national level.
Florida moved from roughly national prices to above them. The all-items parity was 100.604 in 2020 and rose each year to 103.636 in 2023 before a small dip to 103.414 in 2024, a net gain of 2.810 points.
The state tax system is built on sales. Florida levies no personal income tax, Census records no state individual income or property tax, and general sales supplied 62.9% of fiscal 2025 collections. The general state sales tax rate is 6%, with many counties adding a discretionary surtax. Total state collections were $2,709 per resident, rank 49, and the Census Bureau notes that sales tax paid by visitors makes per-resident figures a poor guide to a household's own bill. Owners paid a median $2,730 a year in local real estate taxes.
Real per capita personal income, adjusted for Florida's prices, is $57,131, rank 30 and below the U.S. figure.
The two neighbours are both cheaper on price level, rents and home values. Georgia's price level is 96.293 and its two-bedroom median $1,326, or $338 a month less; Alabama's is 88.823, with rents at 61.785 and a median of $960. Oregon (103.361) is the nearest price level nationally.

Before you budget a move
For Florida, get insurance and association quotes for the actual dwelling before comparing ownership with renting. The verified dataset deliberately contains no statewide insurance estimate. A historical home-value or tax median cannot determine underwriting, coverage, deductibles or an association assessment for a selected address.
A move from an inland job to a coastal destination should be priced with the same household needs and a realistic travel plan. Ordinary state income-tax treatment is only one budget item. The BEA price level combines consumption categories and cannot isolate your groceries, electricity, transport or medical coverage.
